HOW RICE IS SERVED ON YOUR DINING-TABLE

Since the olden days, people have always been changing information. Man is not determined to live solitary except certain people or those who do this for certain purposes. People live among others and they need to increase, too. Increasing in many ways, in the way to get their food more easily, to find new things important for them, or in short to make life easier, information is one way to reach it.

When the world is not as developed as now, information was still very limited. People did change information, but in much simpler ways compared to those that are used nowadays in places where writing had not been used, they changed information by speaking directly or through codes. Then people used letters in the form of writings on pieces of paper or perhaps when paper had not been found yet, they wrote letters or messages on leaves or tree-barks. Very important things were carved on stones.

My name is Romanus and I live in Yogyakarta. I’m a third-year high school student who failed the national final examination, in May 2006. I got 3 in Math, even though I got 8,60 in English and 9,20 in Indonesian. And those who got a 5 in all subjects passed. It’s very ironic.

The government decides that students pass only on the result of the final examination (UAN) without considering the student’s learning process, which lasts three years. My question is, “Can the final examination guarantee the quality of education in this country?”

The worst thing is that I was admitted to the school dentistry at Gajah Mada University. Now I must face the reality that I’ve lost my chance and my dream is shattered.

I would say that the UAN is not everything. Therefore, the government should consider allowing the students who failed in the first final exam to take another test.

Pertanyaannya adalah:

What is the best title for the text above?

b.   Failed students should be admitted to universities.

c.   Final exam should be changed to another test.

d.   Final exam should not be held anymore.

e.   Students should not fail in the final exam.

Do you still remember the climate change conference in Bali? Do you know what is meant by the climate changing?

Global warming is the changing of climate. Temperatures vary from day to day and year to year. Global warming is very dangerous. Why is it so?

Global warming melts the ice at the poles. This would then cover all the flat coastal lands. People would have less land on which to live or grow food.

Plants and animals are adapted to their climates. If the climate changes rapidly, many may not be able to adapt. Some species will simply die out. Others may spread to cooler climates. They will be struggling with species already in place.

So what can we do to save the planet? People should stop cutting down forest and burning the wood. There must be a clear regulation of the use of cars and other machines to decrease the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Otherwise the earth and all the entirely life will vanish.

Pertanyaan2nya adalah:

1.   The last paragraph tells us about ………

      a.   an advice how to cut down forest and burn the wood

      b.   a suggestion to overcome the climate changing

      c.   a warning about a clear regulation of transportation

      d.   a clear regulation of the use of cars and other machines

      e.   the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere

In olden times, many people who worked as brick makers were slaves or servants. If the master brick maker needed extra help, he could always bail someone out of jail and force them to work without any wages. They received one meal a day, and it was usually corn meal and bread.

Many events would happen during this brick making “business”. Now let me tell you the process. The first step of brick making process is to gather clay and mix it up by stepping in it. This is rather a very disgusting view.

Once the clay is clean enough, it is formed into bricks. The brick maker will roll it and then put it in a mold. The mold gives the brick its shape. Sometimes in the middle of the brick making process, the bricks are taken to the area where the bricks will be dried in the sun until they are hard enough to handle.

Afterward the bricks are piled up in the brickyard. The brickyard is the place where bricks are placed for the last time until it is time for them to go into the kiln.

The kiln is the final destination for the bricks. This is when and where the bricks will get baked.

Brick making is an important industry in many parts of the world. It is an activity that can take place in many forms, in large modern factories to small rural businesses. Although the process is simple, many techniques involved in the brick making process are subject to error, possibly reducing the quality of bricks.

Pertanyaan2nya adalah:

2.   The final process of brick making is discussed on     paragraph ………

      a.   one

      b.   two

      c.   three

      d.   four

      e.   five

Jawaban yg benar itu yg D / E ya, Pak/Bu?

3.   How many processes of brick making? Apakah benar ada 4 ya,      Pak/Bu sesuai yg saya garis bawahi? Ataukah ada lebih dari 4       prosesnya? Tolong tunjukkan yang mana saja ya, Pak/Bu.

Wayang is an Indonesian and Malay word for puppet. The term refers to kinds of puppet theater, but sometimes it refers to the puppet itself. “Bayang”, the Javanese word for shadow or imagination, also connotes “spirit”. Performances of shadow puppet theater are accompanied by gamelan in Java and by gender wayang in Bali.

Wayang is a generic term denoting traditional theater in Indonesia. There is no evidence that wayang existed before Hinduism came to Southeast Asia. The first record of a wayang performance is from an inscription dated 930 CE which says “si Galigi mawayang” or “Sir Galigi played wayang”. Since that time, it seems certain features of traditional puppet theater remained. Hinduism arrived in Indonesia from India even before the Christian era and was slowly adopted as the local belief system. Sanskrit became the literary and court language of Java and later of Bali. The Hindus changed the Wayang (as did the Muslims, later) to spread their religion, mostly by stories from the Mahabharata or the Ramayana.

Mr. Sparrow was only a little bird. He was not at all a nice bird, because he was always telling stories about someone. Many birds and animals in the forest were complaining about him. But Mr. Sparrow did not take any notice of their complaints. He kept on telling stories, often causing bitter quarrels between the many inhabitants of the forest.

One day this nasty little birds was sitting on the branch of a tree, when he spied Mr. Rabbit coming by. Not knowing that Mr. Sparrow was quite close in the tree above him, Mr. Rabbit was talking loudly to himself, “I’ll do something which will make Mr. Fox so angry! Ha, ha, ha! He will be so angry, I’m sure!”

On hearing this Mr. Sparrow immediately cried out to Mr. Rabbit, “No, Mr. Rabbit, you won’t! For I’m going to tell Mr. Fox what you’ve just said!”

Mr. Rabbit was quite startled. Then he cried back in a little voice, “Please, Mr. Sparrow, don’t tell Mr. Fox. I beg you, please!”

“Oh no, Mr. Rabbit, I’m going to Mr. Fox this very moment and tell him what you’ve said!”

And with that the ugly little bird quickly flew away.

Mr. Rabbit was puzzled for a moment. He did not know what to do, for he was so afraid of Mr. Fox.

“Mr. Fox will kill me, I’m sure. I should not have talked so loudly.”

Mr. Rabbit thought hard, and at last he got a bright idea. He smiled to himself. He did have bright ideas sometimes.

In the meantime Mr. Sparrow had arrived at Mr. Fox’s den and had told him what Mr. Rabbit had said. Mr. Fox got very angry with Mr. Rabbit. In a little while he went running through the forest. When he got near his bunny-hole Mr. Rabbit called out, “Mr. Fox! Mr. Fox! Mr. Fox!”

            “What?”

“Please don’t come near me,” said Mr. Rabbit.

“And why not?” asked Mr. Fox, a bit puzzled.

“Because you will kill me and set my house on fire.”

            “Why do you say that?”

“I was told so,” answered Mr. Rabbit. “Someone told me that you said, “I’ll kill Mr. Rabbit and set his house on fire!”

“Who told you that?” asked Mr. Fox, astonished.

            “Mr. Sparrow told me!”

            “Mr. Sparrow, did you say?”

“Yes, indeed. Mr. Sparrow warned me against you!”

Mr. Fox did not say another word, and slunk homewards.

Next day Mr. Sparrow was sitting in a tree not far from Mr. Fox’s den. He was waiting for Mr. Fox to show himself. As soon as he saw Mr. Fox, he called out to him.

“What do you want?” asked Mr. Fox.

“I’ve got something to tell you,” answered Mr. Sparrow.

“Ah, have you! Please come nearer, Mr. Sparrow, then I can hear you better.”

Mr. Sparrow jumped on a stone in front of Mr. Fox.

“Please stand on my head, dear Mr. Sparrow, for my left ear is bad, and I can’t hear with my right one.”

Feeling very pleased Mr. Sparrow immediately jumped on to Mr. Fox’s head.

“Look,” said Mr. Fox, “why don’t you stay in my mouth? Then I’ll be able to hear you nicely.”

“That’s a good idea,” said Mr. Sparrow happily, and hopped into Mr. Fox’s mouth. Mr. Fox at once shut his mouth and ate Mr. Sparrow.

“Now go and tell stories about me!” he said.

Mr. Fox laughed loud and long.
