The petroleum we obtain today was formed under the ground for many millions of years. In the past, small animals living in the sea sank to the sea bed when they died. Layers of these creatures built up over millions of years, and the actions of heat, pressure and bacteria turned their bodies into petroleum. The petroleum spread through porous rocks until it came to impervious rocks. In this way, pockets of petroleum were formed beneath the ground. Over many thousands of years, this land rose above the sea, and deposits of oil are now found on or near land.

Oil companies employs scientists to study rocks and discover where oil is likely to be found. If it seems likely that oil exists beneath their feet, they will drill a narrow hole to find out whether there is any oil. They may be unsuccessful; if a new field is being explored, there is one chance in nine of discovering petroleum.

Pertanyaannya adalah:

2.   Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?

      a.   Heat, pressure and bacteria play an important role in the formation of petroleum.

      b.   Scientists always succeed in finding a new oil field.

      c.   Scientists are employed to discover petroleum.

Mice may be the culprits behind an epidemic of childhood allergies being seen by doctors in the United States, research at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore indicates.

The team found that 95 percent of all homes examined in two New York districts and six other United States cities had evidence of mice in at least one room.

In Baltimore, allergy triggers in the form of mouse urine and skin flakes were found in every single home visited. Eighteen percent of the children in these homes were allergic to mice and these tended to have a more severe form of asthma.

The team took samples from homes in the Bronx and East Harlem, both in New York, as well as in Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit.

For a long time, mice were not suspected of triggering allergies in the home. “Now we know that houses are full of it, and we were surprised that mice turned out to be even more important in inner-city asthma than cats, dogs or dust mites,” said Dr. Robert Wood of Johns Hopkins.

      a.   two

      b.   five

Ants are small insects. The body of an ant is clearly divided into three sections: the head, the thorax, and the gaster. (The narrow waist is actually within the abdomen, so the part of the abdomen behind the waist is called the gaster.) The waist can be made up of one or two small segments, depending on the species.

Ants are social insects living in colonies comprised of one or a few queens, and many workers. The queen generally stays deep and safe within a nest. Most ants that you see are workers and these are all females. Depending on species, workers may be similar in size, or come in a range of sizes.

Ants tend to come in dark or earth tones. Different species are black, earth-tone reds, pale tans, and basic browns.
