If I were a president, I would buy a new car.

if + Simple Past, main clause with Conditional I (= would + Infinitive)

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

The main clause can also be at the beginning of the sentence. In this case, don't use a comma.

Example: I would send her an invitation if I found her address.

Note: Main clause and / or if clause might be negative. See Simple Past und Conditional I on how to form negative sentences.

Example: If I had a lot of money, I wouldn’t stay here.

Were instead of Was

In IF Clauses Type II, we usually use ‚were‘ – even if the pronoun is I, he, she or it –.

Example: If I were you, I would not do this.

memahami acaan ada beberapa cara:

1. Teknik scanning ; yaitu teknik membaca dengan cepat untuk menemukan gambaran umum nya.

2. Teknik Skimming: yaitu teknik membaca cepat untuk menemukan informasi tertentu/ spesifik.

kalau masih belum mahir sebaiknya dengan berlatih yang banyak. pahami pelan pelan dan check di kamus jika ada kata kata baru.

Auxiliary verbs adalah kata kerja bantu yang secara gramatikal berfungsi membentuk atau memberi tambahan arti pada kalimat. Umumnya auxiliary verbs digunakan bersama-sama dengan kata kerja utama (main verbs) dan membantunya membentuk struktur gramatikal sebuah kalimat.

Ada tiga auxiliary verbs: to be, to do, dan to have. Be, do, dan have tidak mempunyai makna jika berdiri sendiri sebagai auxiliary verbs, meskipun begitu dalam bahasa Indonesia umumnya diartikan sebagai “sedang”, “telah”, “apakah”, atau “sungguh-sungguh”.


To Be
Auxiliary verbs yang biasa digunakan adalah be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been. Sebagai auxiliary verbs, to be biasa digunakan bersama past participle untuk membuat kalimat passive dan bersama present participle untuk membuat kalimat continuous.

Contoh:
- He is watching TV.
- We are teaching you about helping verbs.
- Small fish are eaten by big fish.
- He was killed in the war.
- The agencies were completing the inventories.
- I will be seeing him soon.
- He had only been trying to help.
- The house is being painted.


To Do
Auxiliary verbs yang digunakan adalah do, does, did. Sebagai auxiliary verbs, to do biasa digunakan bersama-sama kata kerja utama (main verbs) membentuk kalimat pertanyaan atau kalimat negatif. Dan juga dipakai untuk memberikan tekanan atau menghindari pengulangan kata kerja utama. Auxiliary verbs ini dikenal juga dengan istilah dummy operator atau dummy auxiliary.

Contoh:
- Do you like bananas?
- I don't feel like going out tonight.
- Where do you live?
- Don't forget to write.
- It doesn't matter if you win or lose.
- I didn't know what to do.
- What did you do with that notebook?
- He speaks faster than she does.
- I do understand.

EXPRESSING INVITATION, REQUEST, ASKING AND GIVING PERMISSION

Read the dialogue and then answer the questions.

Mrs. Thufailah : Najmi, have you finished washing the dishes?
Najmi : Yes, I have mom.
Mrs. Thufailah : Would you like to go to the shop and buy some ketchup? It’s gone.
Najmi : I just brought it last night.
Mrs. Thufailah : I couldn’t find it. Where did you put it?
Najmi : Wait for a minute mom. I am coming down ….. (after a few minutes). Here you are, mom.
Mrs. Thufailah : Oh, you put it there. You should put it at its usual place. Can you help me to cook?
Najmi : Surely, mom. What do you want me to do now?
Mrs. Thufailah : Get some chicken from the refrigerator, cut it into small pieces and wash it, okay?
Najmi : Yes, mum. ….. (after a few minutes)
I am through, mum. Here you are.
Mrs. Thufailah : Could you help me to set the table? Your father may be at home soon.

 The following text is an example of hortatory exposition:

 

Students’ cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by teachers nowadays.
Despite the fact that teachers advise their students not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students still do cheating. There are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test or examination, such as looking other students’ work, put some notes under their clothes, write notes or formulas on their desks make hand signals or go to rest rooms to get the answers from their friends.
In my view, students who do cheating are committing a crime. It is a sort of taking something illegally. This crime causes negative results to the students. Students who always cheat deteriorate their mental capacity. Cheating acts also create dependence. They weaken their self confidence. Instead of preparing for the coming test, they are busy to organize notes on a piece of paper. If this awful habit continues, the students will lose their opportunity to develop their intellectual and mind.
Therefore, school should consider cheating as a very serious problem. School board and administration should go hand to overcome this matter. Honesty must be put in school’s vision. Harsh punishment must be applied to students who commit this crime.

 Conditional type 1:

1. If I study, I will pass the exams.

2. If you see John tonight, tell him to e-mail me.

3. If Ben gets up early, he can catch the bus.

 

 Copnditional type 2:

1. If I studied, I could pass the exams. 

It means that because I do not study, I can not pass the exams.

2. If It were Sunday, I could take a walk.

It means that because it is not Sunday, I can not take a walk.

3. If you brought the camera, we would take a beautiful scenery.

 It means that you do not bring the camera, so we can not take a beautiful scenery.

 

Conditional type 3:

1. If you had invited me, I would have attent your party.

It means that you did not invite me, so I did not attend your party.

2. If my father had given me some money, I might have bought a new dress.

It means that because my father did not give me some money, I might not buy a new dress. 

3. If I had helped my mother, she would not have got angry with me.

 It means that I did not help my mother, so she got angry with me.
