CREATION OF MOUNT BROMO
This is a legend about the creation of Mount Bromo, a famous volcano in East Java.

During the reign of the last king of Majapahit (in the 13th century), Brawijaya, one of the King's wives gave birth to a girl, Roro Anteng. Later she got married to a priest named Joko Seger. Because of an unfortunate situation, they were forced to leave the kingdom. They settled an area in the mountain named Tengger.

They were unhappy because they didn't have a child. They climbed the peak of the mountain and prayed to the gods. Betara Bromo -- god of fire, promised them many children. A stipulation was that they would have to sacrifice their youngest child. They finally had twenty-five children. They were instructed to sacrifice the youngest, Kesuma, but instead they hid him. An eruption occurred and Kesuma fell into the crater. His voice was heard saying, "I have to be sacrificed so that you will all live. From now on you should arrange an annual ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo."

Kesuma's brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year by offering fruits, vegetables, rice and meats. This ceremony is still held today by Kejawen sects (an original Javanese religion).

How to send MultiMedia Messages (MMS)

1. Make sure your handheld has established a Bluetooth connection with an MMS enabled mobile phone. Configure a Bluetooth connection with a mobile phone.
2. On your handheld, launch the Messages application.
3. Tap the New button, and select Media message.
4. Enter a mobile number in the To: field, or tap the To: button to look up a number in your Contacts.
5. You can send an MMS message to multiple recipients. Tap the icon in the upper right corner to add recipients to the Cc: and Bcc: fields, much like email. After you've finished adding recipients, tap the icon again to return to the message.
6. Enter a subject in the Subj: field. MMS messages, like email messages, generally have a subject and a body.
7. Tap on the New Slide button.
8. An MMS message can have multiple slides, and each slide can contain text, images, movies and sounds (or any combination). The slide show is the body of your message. The slide editor, where you are now, is where you define what the slide show will look like.
9. Observe the slide show editor:
• The current slide is at the top left corner.
• The setting that determines how long the slide will be shown (1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds) is at the top right corner.
• Media message editing tools are along the left side of the screen.
• Drawing tools: Pencil, Text, Line, Circle, Solid Circle, Box, Solid Box, Fill Color, Eraser
• Weight and calligraphy shape of line
• Font: Typeface and size
• Palette: Select a color
• Load Picture: Add a picture to the canvas (either a saved photo, or use the camera to take a picture now). To remove a picture, tap Menu, and from the Slide menu, select Clear Picture. Removing a picture will also remove any annotations you've made to the picture.
• Load Sound: Add a tune to the slide. To remove a tune, tap Menu and from the Slide menu, select Clear Audio.
• The canvas, where you create the slide, is the main area on the screen.
• A counter that shows you which slide your editing, and how many total slides there are, is at the right side of the screen.
• The new slide icon, for adding slides, is next to the counter.
10. To add another slide, tap the new slide icon at the bottom right.
11. When you've finished the last slide you want to add, tap Done.
12. In the media message screen, press the Play button at the bottom right to see the message as it will appear to the recipient.
13. Tap Send to send it immediately, or tap Done to discard your changes and delete it (or save to the Drafts mailbos).

The aim of an explanation is to tell how or why something happens. Explanations are often about natural or scientific phenomena, processes or events.

Carnivorous plants

These students wrote their explanations after watching a video about carnivorous  (fresh-eating) plants. These plants live in places that have very few nutrients in the soil. To survive in this hostile environment, they capture and eat live prey. Most eat insects, but some can swallow rats and small birds.

Venus Flytrap

The Venus Flytrap is an extraordinary plant. It is a carnivorous (flesh eating) plant which can digest flies and other insects.

When the ‘trap’ is open, it looks like a large seashell with sharp, spiky ‘teeth’. It has bright colours and a beautiful scent.

Insects are attracted to the plant because of its vibrant colours and its sweet-scented nectar. The insects land on small ‘trigger’ hairs of the trap and this pressure causes the trap to close. If the insect is too small, the chamber will not close, because there is not enough pressure. Once the trap has swallowed an insect it takes ten days to digest it.

The Venus Flytrap prefers tropical weather and so it is found in places like South America. It is often used by people to catch the annoying insects that fly around their houses. In my opinion it’s very useful plant!

The Picher of Death

You may have heard of a plant called the Picher of Death. As you can probably tell by its name, it kills and eats insects. If you want to know how, read on!

To catch flies and other insects, this  plant needs a bait and a trap. The bait in this case in nectar. The trap is the cup or ‘pitcher’ shaped leaves which have short hairs at the top to give the insect a sure foothold, but slippery hairs pointing downwards, so it can’t escape once it falls in. the other part of the trap is a digestive fluid inside the cup.

How it catches the insect is really quite simple. First the insect is attracted by the nectar. Then it slips on the smooth inner surface of the plant. Next it is forced downwards by the slippery hairs. Then it falls into the digestive fluid and is drowned.

An interesting fact about this plant is that the pitcher leaves can grow to the size of a fully grown adult’s hand.
