TOLONG BUATKAN MAKALAH TENTANG SMOKING SEKARANG? MAKALAH INI BUAT HARI SABTU.

Smoking in Restaurant

Smoking in restaurants is just not on.  It must not be allowed because it is rude, harmful to others and dangerous for the smokers.

Firstly, smoking in a restaurant is impolite.  The smell of the smoke affects all people and can turn them off their food.  People pay to taste good food and not to be put off by foul smelling smoke.

Another reason smoking should not be allowed in restaurant is the harm it can do to others.  Passive smoking that is breathing in smoke made by a smoker can lead to asthma attacks and even cancer.

Finally, smoking is dangerous and a health risk to the smokers.  Cigarettes cause heart and lung disease and people should not smoke anywhere, not just in restaurants.

Therefore, smoking in restaurants is impolite, harmful to others and a health risk to the smokers and should not be allowed in any restaurants.

perbedaan may dan might

An article explaining the difference between the modal verbs 'may' and 'might.'

What is the difference, and proper use, of the words "may" and "might?" I know that "can" means ability and "may" means permission, but I don't know where "might" fits into all this (although it seems to have some element of potentiality in it). I often hear people use "may" and "might" interchangeably, but it seems like "may" should not used in a sentence like, "it may be a good idea." Similarly, it appears maybe that "might" ought not to be used in a question like, "might I do that?" My grammatical-gut tells me there is something very (or at least clearly different) about these words and their respective uses. Help, please!

Jonathan

Jonathan, you are not alone in finding the modal verbs a minefield of imprecision and overlapping meanings: they represent one of the most tricky areas in grammar, both for teachers and for learners. This is because, by definition, modality deals with uncertainties and attitudes, rather than certainties and facts, and therefore it is an area of language that resists neat classification.

Also, modality – like all language in use – is evolving over time. Don’t forget that the modal verbs all started life as fully paid up lexical verbs, e.g. will meant the same as want (and still does, in some restricted senses, e.g. if you will). Not only that, modality has evolved differently in different places.

As an American (I assume) you will probably use shall even less than British English speakers, and may use must not where British speakers would say can’t, e.g.

His absence must not have been noticed.

You probably don’t use would have for past probability (The person you spoke to would have been my brother). You may even use double modals (especially if you are from the South) as in I might could help you (= I might be able to help you). Modality, in a word, is a mess.

To address your specific query: You note (correctly) that 'can' means ability and 'may' means permission, but this is not all that they mean.

Fact number 1 about modal verbs: Each modal verb can express two kinds of meaning:
1) likelihood about situations in the world out there (sometimes called extrinsic meaning)
2) a range of meanings to do with the speaker’s internal attitudes, wishes, etc. (intrinsic meaning).

For example, the sentence Camilla may become Queen can mean both Camilla is likely to become Queen, and Camilla is allowed to become Queen. Only the context will make it clear which meaning is intended. And even the context may not be enough, as in the case (cited by some linguist, but I can’t remember who) of a person who said to a boy who was standing at the edge of an Olympic-sized swimming pool: Can you swim a length of that? (meaning: Are you able to…?) whereupon the boy jumped in (understanding: Would you mind…?). Extrinsic meaning was intended, intrinsic meaning was understood.

Some more examples of the twin meanings of the modal verbs are:

could possibility
ability
It could be fun.
We could see the top.
will predictability
volition
It will be a nice day.
I’ll give you a hand.
would predictability
volition
He would say that.
Would you lend me the car?

Might is no exception to the rule that modals express two kinds of meaning. On the one hand, might in its extrinsic sense expresses what Michael Swan calls weak probability (i.e. weaker than may). Might also expresses an intrinsic meaning, which, like may, has to do with permission. But this is much rarer than the permission use of may, and only really survives in the rather formal question: Might I…? (as in Might I use the phone?), in some fixed phrases, such as if I might suggest, if I might be so bold…, and in reported speech: We asked if we might take photographs. But, by far the commonest use of might is in its extrinsic sense of weak probability. This contrasts with may, which is more evenly distributed (although can has largely usurped the permission function of may: Can we have we a break?).

Is might interchangeable with may?

In most instances, yes (accepting that might is a little less certain than may):

It might rain It may rain.
You might be right You may be right.
She might have got lost. She may have got lost.
Might I use the phone? May I use the phone?

However, in some cases it is not interchangeable:

  • Hypothetical statements: If I had the time, I might learn Russian. You might have been killed! World War II might have lasted another two years. (A British newspaper once headlined an article: Chernobyl: What could have happened and what might have happened. Work it out!)
  • Complaints (which are also hypothetical): You might have phoned and said you were going to be late!
  • may not (= no permission) can’t be substituted with might not: You may not smoke in here.
  • Likewise, may in the sense of I wish: May he rest in peace.
The difference between may and might is subtle. They both indicate that something is possible, but something that may happen is more likely than something that might happen. So you may go to a party if Matt Damon invites you, but you might go to a party if your least favorite cousin invites you.

A Mighty Stretch

I remember the difference by thinking that I should use might when something is a mighty stretch. Imagine something you'd almost never do, and then imagine someone inviting you to do it. For me, it's white-water rafting. The idea terrifies me. So if someone (such as my former employer) asked me to go on a corporate bonding white-water rafting trip, it's unlikely I would go, but I could be convinced if I thought my job depended on it. But it would be a mighty stretch. So I'd say something like, "Yeah, I might go; and pigs might fly, too."

So imagine whatever it is you'd be reluctant to do but wouldn't completely rule out, and then imagine yourself saying in a nice, sarcastic voice, "Yeah, I might." And that should help you remember to use might when the outcome is uncertain or unlikely and to use may
when something is more likely to happen, such as attending a nice, safe company lunch where helmets and life vests aren't required.

You might clean your room, but you may call your friend later. You might climb Mt. Everest someday, but you may go hiking in the foothills next weekend.

Might Is the Past Tense of May

There are two exceptions to this rule.

First,
might is the past tense of may. So you have to use might when you are referring to the past. For example, even if it's likely that Squiggly went to a party last night, Aardvark shouldn't say, “Squiggly may have gone to the party’; he should say, “Squiggly might have gone to the party.”

The second exception is a gray area. When you're talking about something not happening, it can be better to use might because people could think you're talking about permission if you use may
. This is clearer with an example. If you aren't sure whether you'll go to the party, and you say, "We may not go to the party," it can be misinterpreted to mean you don't have permission to go to the party, particularly in writing, where voice inflections don't help guide the meaning. But if you say, "We might not go to the party," then your meaning is clear. It's the safer bet.

So remember to use may when the outcome is likely and might when the outcome is less likely or uncertain. But also remember that you use might for everything in the past tense. Also, it's OK to use might when you're writing about negative outcomes, even if they're likely outcomes, if using may
would make people think you were talking about having permission.

Modals

Finally, here's a bit of grammar terminology. May and might are both called modals, as are words such as would, should, and could. Modals are helping verbs that tell you more about the mood or attitude of the action verb. For example, you can tell that someone has a different attitude toward a party depending on the modal used. There's a big difference between I may go, I should go, and I would go.

maybe / perhaps

In British English both of these adverbs are still very commonly used and have the same meaning. You use them to say that something is possible or may be true, but you are not certain.

They can be used interchangeably but of the two, maybe is very appropriate for more informal contexts and perhaps is used in more formal situations. Compare the following:

  • I can't find it anywhere. ~ Perhaps / Maybe you threw it away.
  • How old is Jane? ~ I don't really know. In her twenties, certainly. Twenty-five, maybe.
  • There were perhaps as many as fifty badly wounded soldiers in the hospital.
  • Perhaps I should explain to you how they came to be there.
  • St Paul's Cathedral is perhaps one of London's most prominent landmarks.
  • Why don't you join us for the New Year celebrations? ~ Yeah, perhaps / maybe I will.
  • Maybe you are right! Perhaps it would be best if you didn't invite Johnnie

Note that perhaps is pronounced 'praps'. Note also from the above illustrations that perhaps and maybe can be used to refer to past, present or future events.

\"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\"
\"\"

may / might

Similarly, we can use the modal auxiliaries may or might to say that there is a chance that something is true or may happen. May and might are used to talk about present or future events. They can normally be used interchangeably, although might may suggest a smaller chance of something happening. Compare the following:

  • I may go into town tomorrow for the Christmas sales. And James might come with me!
  • What are you doing over the New Year, Ann? ~ Oh, I may go to Scotland, but there again, I might stay at home.
  • If you go to bed early tonight, you may / might feel better tomorrow.
  • If you went to bed early tonight, you might feel better tomorrow.
  • One of my New Year resolutions is to go to the gym twice a week! ~ And pigs might fly!

Note that 'Pigs might fly' is a fixed expression and always uses might. It means that something will never happen.

In the first conditional example, will perhaps could be substituted.

  • If you go to bed early tonight, you may / might feel better tomorrow.

In the second conditional example, where might is an alternative for would perhaps, may cannot be substituted.

  • If you went to bed early tonight, you might feel better tomorrow.

perhaps / maybe / may / might

Finally, as the very last item for 2001, this joke, which gives you further practice of may and might, maybe and perhaps, has been voted the top British joke of 2001! Does this tell you something about British sense of humour? Happy New Year!

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson* go camping and pitch their tent under the stars. In the middle of the night, Holmes wakes his companion up and says: "Watson, look up at the stars and tell me what you deduce.**" Watson says: "I see millions of stars and maybe quite a few planets among them. It may be true that a few of the planets are quite like Earth and there might be life on them." Holmes replies: "Watson, you bloody fool***! Somebody has stolen our tent!"

* Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were the famous characters created by the British writer of detective stories, Arthur Conan Doyle in Victorian England.

** Deduce is a rather formal verb and is used particularly in questions when you want to know what logical conclusions may be drawn from the available evidence.

Dolphins

For many years, many people believed that the cleverest animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now, however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.

Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being.

Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.

Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships. There are many stories about dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous water.

Forests

Forests are very important for their products. They are also important to keep the soil fertile and to prevent flood. The fallen leaves and decayed plants become humus which makes the soil rich and holds the rainwater.

For many years, people have not been obeying the government’s regulations. They have been cutting down the forest trees carelessly. As a result, thousands of hectares of land have become worse and the rivers will be full of mud. In the wet season there will be erosion and floods which will destroy the farm lands and villages.

Structuring the Product Review Text

Product reviewing has attracted many blogger. Besides Pay per Click program, reviewing has appeared as top choice for blogger in earning online. Writing review is lucrative source for blogger. In one side, writing review can make rich content of the blog. Of course it has to be suitable or arranged to suit the niche of the blog. In the second side, blogger can get earning from that content.

Review is one of text genres. This classification of text types is commonly based on the structure which used by the writer to compose his text. Each text type will have different form of generic structure. As I said in my previous post, review text usually has generic structure as:

Introduction: it is the highlight of the general description about what will be reviewed. It can be product, services which want to be sold, or just a site which want to be known publicly. Then it will drive more traffic into the site.

Evaluation: the second phase is coming inside into the product in details. It states the parts, uniqueness, quality of the product which will be known publicly. However too much detail description will “teach” the will-buyer and it does not sound good. Evaluating as far as necessary for the targeted buyer is more genuine. The term of evaluation will not be far from simple word of good or bad. In this phase reviewer will apply much evaluative word, valuable, useful, worthy, etc.

Interpretation: after writing about the objective thing of the product, it is the time for reviewer to write about what he thinks or impresses on the product. Of course this phase can be done after getting enough evaluation on the product. It is personal idea about the product. Frequently to support and strengthen his idea or impression, a reviewer describes a comparison to other similar product. He states in which side the product has additional value or honestly admitted that the product lacks value in certain side.

Summary: this phase is recommending conclusion for reader of the product. After clearly explanation, a reviewer will make a final comment whether the product is valuable or not for targeted buyer. This phase is the worth of the review for reader.

Good Translation

Translation is transferring not only words by word but also message to message. In certain case, it will be quite difficult to make translation. How is to make good Arabic translation from English phrase of “as white as snow” meanwhile there is no snow in Arabian?
The basic requirement of a good translator is mastering resource and target language with all non-linguistic aspect . If he is an English translator and wants to make Hindi translation, he should understand well the language and aspect of India. Similarly, if he works with Farsi translation, he has to be familiar with linguistics and non-linguistics of Farsian.
However, translation providers can bridge that difficulty. The translation experts, such as India translation will help to fix the problem. The experts who have grammatical, lexical, sociolinguistics specialization will match in transferring the message from one language to another language.

a TAMM Creation

The loved people will make us do everything. They have great impact on us. We will do anything for them. Luckily we have ability to catch the advantage of that "force", one example is a TAMM creation. This site is built with the motivation to do everything for the kids and fortunately supported by the husband. After all, we find that this site is composed by a mother. Now she has and run her own business.
She loves writing as it is said in her previous pos 'freelance writing'. It is a great interest. Firstly it is just for fun but in the end she eagerly to write a book. At least by writing she has opportunity to share her idea, thought, and creation. She understands well that writing has strong power for socialization personally and profitably. This blog where she writes on used to be a medium for her to run his business, selling handicraft creation. As everything had changed she focused on topic of kid and family. She has been a writer.

“THE IMPORTANCE OF MASTERING ENGLISH”
By : Jasmansyah
(An English Teacher Of Sman 1 Sagaranten Sukabumi Jabar
And Post Program Student at UPI Bandung, English Department program)

Bismillahirrahmaanirrahiem,
Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarokatuh,

Your Excellencies the committee,
The honorable of jury,
Dear my friends who participates in this speech contest,
And my loving brothers and sisters

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent and the Merciful.
All praises be to Allah SWT, the lord of the world, the master of the day after, the creator of everything in this Universe, where he has no partner. He has also given us such deeply enjoyable, particularly faith and healthy comfort, hence, we could attend here in a good situation.
Peace and Salutation be upon our prophet Muhammad SAW, who has taught us the cardinal principles of the unity of God, obliged us to confess it with the tongue and believe it in the heart. He also has brought us from the darkness to the brightness, from stupidity to cleverness, in the other word “Minazzhulumaati Ilannuur”

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Indeed, it is very great pleasure for me in this precious chance to deliver my speech to the most honorable audiences entitled:

“THE IMPORTANCE OF MASTERING ENGLISH”

Before I am going to deliver the main point of my speech, I thank to the Education and Culture department of Sukabumi regency, particularly to the committee of this- program who has invited our school to participate in this contest.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Language plays an important role in human life. One tries to acquire, learn and use language as a means of communication, and simultaneously as social symbol of humanity. By using language someone could make statements, convey facts and knowledge explain or report something, and keep social relations among the language users. These indicate that by means of language, people can express their ideas, feeling, information etc through communication.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
As one of language in the world, English is considered and applied as international language. Since then, it is very popular and have been spoken and learnt by almost people in the world. There are some reasons why English is important and many people attempt to learn it. Some of them are: for finding job, traveling, interacting one each other, doing business, taking examination, doing research, writing in the foreign language, etc.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
In such developing country like Indonesia, English has a vital role in all aspects of life, particularly in science and technology. Furthermore, it can be used for developing relationships in the international forum, for reading English book (especially for students from primary school up to colleges/university), to tighten the relationship among nations in the world, etc. As students, we learn English are intended to obtain various knowledge, to comprehend and understand the textbooks learned in English, to gain knowledge and skills, and to be ready enter to the university, as one of the test requirements for students of senior High School (SMA), etc. Looking at the above important roles of English, that is why English is very important to understand and to master by every people throughout the world since before.

My brothers and sisters!
At the end of my speech, I will quote a wise expression: “ENGLISH WILL MAKE EVERYBODY SURVIVE AND GO ANYWHERE”. This expression reminds us how importance of English for human life is. As global or universal language, English is not only enables us to communicate and interact with every people throughout the world, but also it could alter our life to be better. Furthermore, we also must be aware that the western countries play extra ordinary role in developing and keeping science and technology. Thus, if we want to be a skilful scientists, linguists, and be able to compete with the other countries in the world, we must understand, master and learn the language they use, namely English.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Before ending this speech, let me conclude the essential points of my speech:
1. English is highly necessary to be learned and mastered by everyone, in order to be able to compete in the globalization era;
2. English is a key to open and master science and technology, because most of scientists write their experts and inventions in English.
3. As students of high school (SMA), we have to prepare ourselves by learning hard, particularly English as well as the other subjects at school;
4. By mastering English enables us to become survive and go anywhere throughout the world;
Goethe (a Greek philosopher) have ever said:
“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do” and remember:”
Remember: Language indicates Nation. And Don’t Forget “English is a bridge for the future”
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I think it’s completely enough for me to this point. The wrong utterances are caused by limitation of my ability and the right one is merely from Allah SWT. So, I beg your pardon, finally I say.
Wassalamu’alaikum Warohmatullohi Wabarokatuh

Penjelasan Bapak/Ibu sangat membantu saya berlatih utk UN: 1. Apa arti dari peribahasa \"Decision of the majority should be respected\" dan \"Some remedies are worse than the disease\" 2. Bacaan ttg Earthquake: I had just got into bed about half past eleven when I left the tremor. The bed started to tremble and I noticed the electric light, which was hung on the ceiling, was swaying. Then I got out of bed quickly and went to look out of the windows. As I looked, I saw the house opposite began to fall sideways. Then I realized what happening. I put on my dressing-gown hurriedly and rushed out into the garden. I was alone in the house. My wife and children had gone to visit my mother-in-law. For three or four minutes, I heard a terrible noise of walls falling down, and people screaming, and I saw clouds of dust in the air. Then, the trembling stopped. There were about three hundred houses would have to be completely rebuilt. Yg ingin saya tanyakan: What is the purpose of the text? Bacaan: The Jaguar (Panthera Onea) Paragraph 1: Although the jaguar is an animal that is not found in Asia, it is famour in Asia because of the car named after the animal. This report provides information on the characteristics, habitat and life of the jaguar. Paragraph 2: The jaguar belongs to the cat family. It is one of the four big (roaring) cats: the lion, the tiger and the leopard. Because it has spots, a jaguar is often mistaken for the leopard. However, a jaguar has larger rosette markings, a stronger body and a shorter tail. A rosette is a rose shaped spot on an animal. Visiting Bali; a recount text

There were so many places to see in Bali that my friend decided to join the tours to see as much as possible. My friend stayed in Kuta on arrival. He spent the first three days swimming and surfing on Kuta beach. He visited some tour agents and selected two tours. The first one was to Singaraja, the second was to Ubud.
On the day of the tour, he was ready. My friend and his group drove on through mountains. Singaraja is a city of about 90 thousands people. It is a busy but quiet town. The street are lined with trees and there are many old Dutch houses. Then they returned very late in the evening to Kuta.
The second tour to Ubud was a very different tour. It was not to see the scenery but to see the art and the craft of the island. The first stop was at Batubulan, a center of stone sculpture. There my friend watched young boys were carving away at big blocks of stone. The next stop was Celuk, a center for silversmiths and goldensmiths. After that he stopped a little while for lunch at Sukawati and on to mass. Mass is a tourist center
My friend ten-day-stay ended very quickly beside his two tour, all his day was spent on the beach. He went sailing or surfboarding every day. He was quiet satisfied.
