Mitosis merupakan periode pembelahan sel yang berlangsung pada jaringan titik tumbuh
(meristem), seperti pada ujung akar atau pucuk tanaman. Proses mitosis terjadi dalam
empat fase, yaitu profase, metafase, anafase, dan telofase. Fase mitosis tersebut terjadi
pada sel tumbuhan maupun hewan. Terdapat perbedaan mendasar antara mitosis pada
hewan dan tumbuhan. Pada hewan terbentuk aster dan terbentuknya alur di ekuator pada
membran sel pada saat telofase sehingga kedua sel anak menjadi terpisah.
Meiosis hanya terjadi pada fase reproduksi seksual atau pada jaringan nuftah. Pada
meiosis, terjadi perpasangan dari kromosom homolog serta terjadi pengurangan jumlah
kromosom induk terhadap sel anak. Disamping itu, pada meiosis terjadi dua kali periode
pembelahan sel, yaitu pembelahan I (meiosis I) dan pembelahan II (meiosis II). Meiosis I
dan meiosis II terjadi pada sel tumbuhan. Demikian juga pada sel hewan terjadi meiosis I
dan meiosis II. Baik pada pembelahan meiosis I dan II, terjadi fase-fase pembelahan
seperti pada mitosis. Oleh karena itu dikenal adanya profase I, metafase I, anafase I ,
telofase I, profase II, metafase II, anafase II, dan telofase II. Akibat adanya dua kali
proses pembelahan sel, maka pada meiosis, satu sel induk akan menghasilkan empat sel
baru, dengan masing-masing sel mengandung jumlah kromosom setengah dari jumlah
kromosom sel induk.
