A supervisor was jailed for two months for repeatedly striking his Indonesian maid on the head and back with a television remote, news reports said on Thursday.
Muhammad Shafiq Woon Abdullah admitted in a Singapore court he abused the woman on several occasions between June and October 2002, The Straits Time said.
The magistrate’s court heard that Shafiq, 31, began striking Winarti, 22, about a month after she started working for him. He hit her on the head with the TV set’s remote control because he was unhappy with her work. On one occasion, he punched her on the back after accusing her of daydreaming.
S.S. Dhillon, Shafiq’s lawyer, said his client lost his “better senses” when he saw his daughter’s face covered as she lay in bed. He said his client thought the maid had put the child in danger.

Speech production is made possible by the specialized movements of our vocal organs that generate speech sound waves.
Like all sound production, speech production requires a source of energy. The source of energy for speech production is the steady stream of air that come of air that comes from the lungs as we exhale. When we breath normally, the air stream is inaudible. To become audible, the air stream must vibrate rapidly. The vocal cords cause the air stream to vibrate.
As we talk, the vocal cords open and close rapidly, chopping up the steady air stream into a series of puffs. These puffs are heard as a buzz. But this buzz is still not speech.
To produce speech sounds, the vocal tract must change shape. During speech we continually alter the shape of the vocal tract by moving the tongue and lips, etc. these movements change the acoustic properties of the vocal tract, which in turn produce the different sounds of speech.

Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money and corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States. It’s just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims Jakarta as the most corrupt place in Indonesia.
The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs who want to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe the officials.

DIVORCE MAY MEAN HAPPIER LIVES FOR THE CHILDREN Divorce changes childhood – but not necessarily for the worse. Many children from broken homes go on establish loving relationships with both their parents. It’s difficult for children to be party to any ongoing dispute between parents. One child spoke of the “Bermuda Triangle” – the mythical space between the homes of her parents into which socks and schoolbooks, games kit and pencil sharpeners always seemed to disappear. Another child complained bitterly that one mother refuse to let her on the weekends she spent with her dad. They hated being told secrets and carrying messages to and from between their parents. Worrying about how the kids will be affected by divorce often leads parents into crooked thinking. What matters is overcoming and dealing with those difficulties. In life WE are always going to face difficulties and that WE should never have problems is not a good way at looking at childhood. Rather than wringing their hands about the harmful effects of splitting up, parents can be positive and look at strategies for dealing with problems that might arise. As a proof, a lot of parents that we interviewed stayed together longer than they should have done though they were so worried about the effect of divorce on their time thinking that any kind of adolescent rebellion was because of the divorce. What we are saying is that young people can strive under these circumstances and that it’s the quality of the relationships that matter. One day, a young wanderer got lost in a wood. Suddenly he saw a light from an old hut. He knocked at the door and an old woman opened it. She was crying. She said that the devil had stolen her magic candle. The candle could give grant anything she asked. The wanderer asked her where the devil lived. “In a castle not far from here,” said the old woman.
The wanderer went to the castle. There he found the devil but he was old and weak. Therefore, when the wanderer grabbed the magic candle from the devil’s table and ran away, the devil couldn’t chase him.
However, the wanderer wasn’t a good man. Instead of returning the magic candle to the old woman, he kept if for himself. He lit the candle and made a wish, “I want to go far away from here.”
Suddenly the genies appeared and took him to a beautiful palace. There was a party in the palace. The wanderer wanted to make some money, so he lit the candle again and wished for some jewelry. He sold them to the guests and was soon making a lot of money. The beautiful princess came to buy the jewelry but there was nothing left. Therefore, the wanderer gave her the other jewelry. The wanderer fell in love with her and asked her to marry him at once. The kind princess said yes and they got married.
In his happiness, the wanderer told the princess about his adventure with the magic candle.
“Darling, do you know how can I marry you with a lot of jewelry? How can I have a lot of the money?” he started to explain. “I know whatever you do. DENPASAR: The Four Seasons Resort Bali launched its annual Hope for Live Charity Event at Jimbaran Beach, Kuta, on Saturday to raise money for people suffering from cancer.
Various activities were held, including a fun run and walk with hundreds of people taking part. Balinese musical groups, including Superman Is Dead and Animo Band, provided entertainment on the day.
The event raised about Rp 150 million (US$ 15,789) for the charity, not including ticket sales. Fun run and walk tickets were sold at Rp 75,000 each.
Niken Pratiwi said that the funds would be handed over to Mitra Peduli Cancer Foundation to help finance medication for cancer sufferer in Bali.
